Here's some history for you.....
The word "Golf" was originally pronouced "Gowf" by the Scotts. The word is derived from the dutch world "kolf" which means club.
Early courses had anywhere from 5 to 22 holes... and was originally thought to be timed with how long a 5th of liquor would last while playing. St. Andrews decided on the standard of 18 and everyone else followed suit.
